# The New Technology Proving Low Cost Wave Buoy project advances to its next phase

Explore IMOS's low-cost wave buoy tech, a joint effort by top Australian marine research institutes, enhancing wave data accuracy.

**Date:** Oct 31, 2020

In early November 2020, [The Integrated Marine Observing System](https://imos.org.au/) (IMOS) New Technology Proving Low Cost Wave Buoy Technology sub-facility celebrated its one-year milestone, a collaborative effort involving researchers from the [University of Western Australia](https://www.uwa.edu.au/), [Deakin University](https://www.deakin.edu.au/), [University of Melbourne](https://www.unimelb.edu.au/), [Australian Institute of Marine Science](https://www.aims.gov.au/) (AUMS), and [Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation](https://www.csiro.au/en/) (CSIRO).

The project focuses on assessing the performance of the small, low-cost [Spotter wave buoys](https://sofar-new-site-a15bfc598b4b4353b097193d.webflow.io/products/spotter), which could aid in efficiently expanding wave observations across Australia. Leveraging the substantial volume of collected data over the past year, the project aims to develop new QA/QC procedures for delivering wave buoy data within IMOS, collaborating closely with the AODN.
