# What was different about the latest Advanced Naval Technology Exercise

The Advanced Naval Technology Exercise, hosted by the [Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command](https://www.metoc.navy.mil/) was held at the [University of Southern Mississippi's Marine Research Center](https://www.usm.edu/ocean-enterprise/marine-research-center.php) on September, 28th 2023. Maritime professionals, high-school students, government and military officials, academics, and others gathered to discuss emerging ocean-sensing and security technologies that the Navy is pursuing alongside its closest federal partners, like [NASA](https://www.nasa.gov/) and the [National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration](https://www.noaa.gov/). One of the presentations spotlighted a partnership between the [U.S. National Ice Center](https://usicecenter.gov/), [Fleet Weather Center Norfolk](https://www.metoc.navy.mil/fwcn/fwcn.html), the [U.S. Coast Guard](https://www.gocoastguard.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAu9yqBhBmEiwAHTx5p71_HIX5CyHjdzgJ1kbt8nLUlUcgr3VW1D3wU14Ea45ER8tYl1bMJxoCD4AQAvD_BwE) and the company [Sofar Ocean](/content/site-root.html) to deploy 15 Spotter buoys during USGS Cutter Arctic deployments to help bolster safety at sea in data-sparse regions.
